The election is over and Bush won. I never considered myself a liberal, in fact when I was in middle school and through some of college I considered myself a hardcore conservative, but apparently I was wrong.
Since Bush has been reelected I have heard people that support Bush saying some things, mainly about the Supreme Court, that truly truly shock me. I have heard a large number of people talking about over turning Roe v. Wade and on top of that I have heard people discussing a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage. While law school and common sense tell me that the likelihood of either of those two things happen is beyond remote, what really concerns me is the seemingly large number of people who want these things to happen.
I am seriously floored, do people other than serious fundamentalists want abortion to be illegal again?! Are people so incredibly afraid of gay marriage they want a constitutional amendment!? With all the things wrong in this world- with a war, a bad economy, the environment, are these things such a huge priority?
On top of all that- what is this obsession with what other people are doing in the privacy of their own home? Granted, I can understand being against partial birth abortion, but do people really actually want to have this procedure pushed back into alleyways with young girls without money going to butchers while the rich girls head off to Europe?
Maybe I am out of touch, but I have to say, I really did not care too much about this election until I started hearing people saying this stuff. My concern actually has nothing to do with Bush, but instead my concern is for the obvious desire of my countrymen to meddle in the lives of their neighbors in such a hostile way.
